FIBC Static Classifications
Understanding the four types of static control in bulk bags
| Type | Description | Grounding | Safe For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type A | Standard bags with no static protection | Not applicable | Non-flammable products only |
| Type B | Low breakdown voltage fabric | Not required | Non-flammable dusts, MIE > 3mJ |
| Type C | Conductive threads, grounded | Required - must be grounded | Flammable powders & dusts |
| Type D | Dissipative without grounding | Not required | Flammable powders & dusts |
Important: Selecting the wrong static classification can be dangerous. Always consult with your safety team and review your material MIE (Minimum Ignition Energy) before specifying bag type.

The food-grade certification and documentation was exactly what our FDA auditors needed. Full lot traceability and proper certificates every time. Bulk Bags California has been an excellent partner.
Switched to Type D bags for our chemical powders. No more worrying about whether the operators remembered to ground the bags. Safety improved and operations simplified.
The ventilated bags were perfect for our firewood operation. Product arrives dry, customers are happy, and the bags hold up well. Great value for specialty applications.
Specialty Bag Questions
When do I need food-grade bulk bags?
Food-grade bags are required when the product will directly contact the bag fabric and will be consumed by humans or animals. This includes ingredients like flour, sugar, grains, spices, and pet food. If your product is pre-packaged inside the FIBC, standard bags may be acceptable. Regulations vary by jurisdiction, so consult with us about your specific application.
What is the difference between Type C and Type D bags?
Type C bags have conductive threads and MUST be grounded to work safely - without grounding they are dangerous. Type D bags use quasi-conductive materials that dissipate static through corona discharge without grounding. Type D is simpler to use but more expensive. Both are safe for flammable powders when used correctly.
Do I need UN-certified bags for my chemical?
UN certification is required when transporting hazardous materials classified as dangerous goods under DOT/IATA regulations. This typically applies to chemicals with specific hazard classifications. Not all chemicals require UN bags - many non-hazardous chemicals can use standard FIBCs. Check your material SDS and transport regulations.
Can I get used specialty bags?
It depends on the type. Used food-grade bags are not recommended due to contamination concerns and certification requirements. Used Type C/D bags may be available but require testing to verify conductivity. Ventilated and baffle bags are sometimes available used. UN certified bags are typically new only. Contact us about specific requirements.
What documentation comes with specialty bags?
Food-grade bags include Certificate of Conformance with lot traceability and material specifications. Type C/D bags include conductivity test results and ATEX certificates. UN bags include full test reports and the UN marking specification. We provide all relevant documentation with every specialty order.
What is the lead time for specialty bags?
Lead times vary by type. Some standard specialty configurations are kept in stock. Food-grade bags typically require 1-3 weeks. Conductive bags (Type C/D) require 2-5 weeks. UN certified bags require 2-4 weeks. Custom specifications may require longer. Contact us for current availability and lead times for your requirements.
